Villa To Be Relegated?

Aston Villa for the drop?

With Wolves already being confirmed for the drop following their defeat to Man City over the weekend the big question is will Aston Villa survive the drop.

Having lost to the hands of fellow struggler’s Bolton 2-1 their odds have been reduced.  Aston Villa’s relegation odds are now just 5/1 with the main bookmakers and 13/2 with Betfair.

Given their current form the odds look pretty good value, especially considering the other teams facing the drop are putting together results when they matter.  Wigan have shown impressive spirit with win’s over Arsenal and Man Utd in recent weeks.

table

Tottenham hold the key

Tottenham may be the team that determines how the relegation battle pans out.  With games against Bolton, Blackburn and Aston Villa to come it will be interesting to see how each perform in their fight for survival.

Bolton

With a game in hand over the other teams it’s up to Bolton to get results in their remaining games against Sunderland, Tottenham, West Brom and Stoke.  Another win and their will be level on points with Aston Villa.

Wigan

With remaining games against Newcastle, Blackburn and Wolves, Wigan have a tough time ahead of them, but who knows what they are capable of given recent results.

The Wigan v Blackburn game is likely to be a decider for both team and a lot is at stake.  Could Wolves who are already relegated bring Wigan down with them on the last day of the season?

QPR

QPR face Stoke, Chelsea and Man City in the final games.  With Chelsea facing a finish outside the top 5 despite an impressive win over Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final this evening they could be a stumbling block for Wigan whilst Man City will be chasing the league if they can get a win over Man Utd at the weekend.

Blackburn

Tottenham, Wigan and Chelsea stand in the way of Blackburn’s survival in the premier league over the coming weeks, ideally needing 3 wins to have any real chance of staying up.   Is it possible? Only time will tell!

With 3 games left to play (4 if you are Bolton) the end of the season will be a nail-biter for many fans and for those not involved in the battle it is likely to be a typical last day affair before the full result will be known.  Either way get ready for an interesting ride over the coming weeks.

Wigan Favourite For Relegation

League standing and roundup

The battle for the Premier League continues into February with Manchester United and Manchester City both tied at the top of the table with 54 points each following a slip up by the previous league leaders City away to Everton during the week.

Since our last look at the table before Christmas things are looking up for both Fulham and Blackburn as they fight to get away from the relegation end of the table.  Unfortunately Wigan, Wolves and Bolton are well in the mix, all of them suffering a poor run of form as of late.

The Premier League stands as follows (from BBC):

premier league 04-02-12

The bottom 6 teams are separated by just 6 points with QPR in 16th position on 21 points leading the way out of the drop zone.  Wigan are sat at the foot of the table with just 15 points and a win away from Wolves.

Relegation odds – February 2012

relegation odds 04-02-12

Having last visited the relegation odds table back in October 2011 when Wigan were favourites for the drop at 1.67 (decimal) they have now shortened even further to just 1.22 to be relegated from the Premier League in 2012.

Now 23 games into the season with 15 left to play and the rather boring transfer window now complete it’s time for the struggling teams to knuckle down and put in some strong performances if they are to have any chance of staying up.

The current relegation odds market almost mirrors the current league table with Wigan, Wolves and Blackburn clear favourites for the drop.

Newly promoted Swansea and Norwich have both put in some good results over the past few months which reflect in their change in odds on the market, both over 10.0 (decimal) to face the drop at the moment

If your looking for value in the relegation odds market then consider West Brom at the moment who are 16.0 for the drop.  With some relegation battle games over the next month followed by matches against both man Utd and Chelsea they could well see themselves further down the table as the league progresses.  QPR whilst still in the mix have made some strong signings in the recent transfer window with the acquisition of both Zamora from Fulham and Cisse who scored in his debut following a move from Lazio, these signings should in theory see them safe, especially if their new manager Mark Hughes can put his stamp on the squad during the back end of the season.

All Change In The Premier League Relegation Odds

League standing and roundup

Following a rather unpredicted weekend of football in which Manchester Utd were defeated 6 – 1 at the hands of Manchester City at Old Trafford and Chelsea lost 1 – 0 away to QPR following 2 red cards the Premier League stands as follows (from BBC):

premier league October 2011

Man City sit at the top of the table with a 5 point lead, followed by usual suspects Man Utd and Chelsea and surprise package Newcastle who along with Man City are still yet to lose a game.

The bottom of the table sees Blackburn and Wigan both on 5 points and only 1 win each (at home), closely followed by Bolton who are the only team in the Premier League yet to record a home win at this stage of the competition.

Relegation odds – October 2011

Relegation Odds October 2011

When we last visited the relegation odds during September all of the three newly promoted teams were within the top 4 to be relegated with Swansea being the favourites at 1.67 (decimal).

Now 9 games into the 2011-2012 campaign the current form of Wigan and Blackburn who prop up the table is shown in the relegation odds market with Wigan now favourite for the drop at 1.70 (decimal).

Whilst Swansea are still within the bottom three favourites for relegation at 1.91 (decimal), Norwich and QPR are both out of the favourites for the drop following a good run of form that sees them both on 12 points and mid table. This is reflected in their odds with Norwich at 3.25 (decimal) and QPR 4.50 (decimal). Others still in the mix at this stage are Wolves and Bolton.

If your looking for value in the relegation odds market then consider Fulham and Sunderland who have odds of 11.0 & 10.0 (decimal) respectively. Sunderland have some tough fixtures over the next month with a trip to Manchester United followed by a home game against Fulham which could push one of them into the bottom three depending on results elsewhere.

Swansea Favourites For Relegation

League standing and roundup

Picking up preceding’s 3 games into the 2011/12 Premier League campaign and the top 4 teams are of little surprise with Manchester United sitting top of the table jointly with their close rivals Manchester City with 3 wins out of 3. Premier League table (from BBC):

premier league september 2011

Last season struggler’s Wolves are sitting in a surprising 5th place with 7 points and an unbeaten record under their belt, a position which Mick Mccarthy is surely to be delighted about.

Some big shocks for most however will be that both Arsenal and Tottenham are sitting towards the bottom of the table, Tottenham having only played 2 games due to the recent London riots and Arsenal who have only managed to pick up a single point in their first 3 games the last being a humiliating 8-2 defeat to the title holders Manchester United.

Relegation odds – September 2011

relegation odds september 2011

Now onto the current relegation odds.  Unsurprisingly the 3 promoted teams Swansea, Norwich and QPR are all within the top four favourites to be relegated at this stage.  Swansea who sit in 15th place on 2 points are current favourites to be relegated with odds of 1.67 (decimal) across a number of the well known online bookmakers.

Norwich are second favourites at odds of 1.85 and QPR who have made some shrewd purchases during the transfer window are at 2.75 in terms of relegation odds helped no doubt by these signings and the 1-0 away win against Everton on the opening day of the season.

Even though Wolves have made an impressive start to this years campaign at odds of 7.0 they represent the best value on the relegation market at the moment.  Fellow struggler’s from last year Wigan and Blackburn along with the promoted teams do not represent good value given the odds.

One other team worth considering for those looking for longer odds would be Everton.  At 17.0 they may be worth a small bet, having recently lost Mikel Arteta to Arsenal and their inability to spend and strengthen their squad may leave them more at risk than in prior years.
